1. Be as flexible as you can be Unless you really have to, don’t plan your itinerary in too much detail. You might arrive somewhere which you’d planned to stay for 3 days in and fall in love with it, make friends who you want to stick with for slightly longer, or have bad luck with the weather and want to stay a bit of extra time. Equally, you might have set aside a week for somewhere you thought you’d love but it just doesn’t float your boat. Although it’s important to be organised or have a rough plan to a certain extent, I would say leave it open and flexible as much as you can. 2. Go off the beaten track Sure, you’re going to want to visit Melbourne, see the harbour bridge and opera house in Sydney and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. I’m not saying don’t visit the main tourist attractions – they are amazing cities and destinations and 100% worth going to, but it’s nice to also plan to …

Fremantle Markets South Terrace & Henderson St, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia The market in Fremantle is up there as one of the most infamous in the country – and when you go, there’s no mistaking why. Located in a beautiful, huge, old building from 1897, its setting is just as good as its content! From authentic boomerangs and aboriginal masks to handmade jewellery and clothing, it houses everything in the Historic Hall – and you can easily pass a whole afternoon sampling the goods. Try: Its infamous Croc-Dogs or Kanga-Bangers. No prizes for guessing what they involve… 2. Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne 513 Elizabeth St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia As one of the oldest and most iconic Australian markets, I can safely say that in almost 9 months of living in Melbourne and countless daytime shopping trips, cultural shows and exhibits promoting food and music from around the world, and visits to the buzzing evening social scene of the infamous Wednesday Night Market, it’s extremely hard to ever get bored of Queen Vic market, …

Sometimes there’s no better feeling than getting out and about in a country and doing something active in the fresh air and the great outdoors. Often it’s the best way to get the feel for a place, and leaves you with memories you’re not going to forget any time soon. I’ve been lucky enough to have had many incredible once-in-a-lifetime outdoor travel experiences over the years and thought I’d do a rundown of my 5 most memorable. 1. Boating and wildlife spotting down the Kinabatangan river in Borneo Kind of like your classic safari, except instead of in a 4×4, you are on a wooden boat on the river, and instead of spotting lions and elephants, you’re on the lookout for Proboscis monkeys and alligators. With a local tour guide and two safaris a day (both very early morning and late afternoon when the wildlife is most active), it’s truly incredible to see this wildlife, a few species of which are now endangered, in their natural rainforest environment. 1. Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, Tasmania Located not too far from Hobart, Bonorong is a definite must-do during your time in Tassie – it’s definitely not your average wildlife park.
